Ancient DBZ Race: Dracona

Should've drawn a darker outline for the hair first but...oh well.  I kinda like it that way.

Anyway, this is my own DBZ Race I've been thinking about for a while, and I've finally gotten around to it.  This is an Ancient Race called the Dracona.  I'm gonna let the bio speak for itself in a minute; I want to briefly talk about the image.  Yes, I used a base (omg it's the end of the world), and these two are just examples of what the race looks like.  I tried to draw fangs, but it didn't work out and whiskers, I wanted to leave those out so it'd look clan at least.  I would've drawn more but it just wasn't gonna happen.  Not being lazy, it's just when it comes to things I don't normally draw or haven't drawn before, there's a high chance of it looking awful.  But again, these are only examples.  Somewhere down the line I'll have my OC from this.  So now, onto the bio:

Bio:

The Dracona Race is known as one of the most ancient races that used to exist on Earth many, many years ago before humans became the main race.  This race was human in appearance, though some had the choice of walking around with minor dragon-like features, such as long whiskers, claws, elongated canines, or pointed ears; it was rare for any to walk around with the tails, as most of the time some would be too long and often get stuck.  Unlike the Saiyan Race, they could not wrap their tails around their waists so easily.  However, unlike humans, they did posses superhuman strength, and could reach twice the speed of a normal human.  They also have sensitive noses, able to pick up scents others may not, though certain smells can be so overpowering that they’ll become truly sluggish and unresponsive until the smell is dealt with.  The Draconians could also grow wings in order to fly, and once landed they’d pull them back in.

What gives this race their name is the link they have to the Dragon Gods (or Eternal Dragons).  Theories have been made based on what evidence was found was that these people worshiped their Dragon Gods, offering feasts whenever the dragon was near, and only ever making a wish when something truly horrible has happened.  Of course, the wish could only be granted if it was in the god’s power, which some found troublesome.  It is unclear if they are the true creators of the Dragon Balls, or if the power only lies with the Namekians, or if this ancient race passed on the ability to create them to the Namekians; no one is sure.

The Dracona Race were rather peaceful compared to the Saiyans; although they did enjoy a good battle, most of these were all in good fun instead of competition.  However, these bloodless battles became more of a practice for the bigger battles later in life between the males of the race; as it turns out, this race had Breeding Seasons just like the animals of today.  They would only occur once a year for two months, usually within the Spring and Summer Months, though some would enter as late as Autumn.  The males would show off their strength in battle, in which these bouts could last for a few days.  The one that collapses first loses the battle, though ties have been found to happen.  In the case of ties, the female would choose her future mate; should he not be what she wants, she’d leave her first choice and get together with the runner-up.  Females have been known to put on displays themselves, though only if they have come into season too soon or too late.  This odd display includes finding the most fragrant and beautiful of flowers, attaching them to their backs (and possibly arms as well as make flower crowns and necklaces), find two big and shiny leaves, and perform exotic dances.  Some opted out of these dances, preferring to let the fragrance do the work and then lay on the charm to attract a mate.  Evidence shows there isn’t much else to the courtship of this race.

Once Breeding Season came to a close and most Draconians had their pair, it takes an odd turn.  Since they are not true animals, mating did not happen right away.  Instead, the Dracona preferred getting to know their chosen mates first, much like humans try to get to know each other to see how compatible they are for a relationship.  If the pair truly did not work out, they split apart; this would sometimes result in the female putting on displays to try and attract a more suitable mate; some males would just wait for the next Breeding Season.  If both Draconians found they are indeed compatible, they then test each other to see how in sync they really are.  These are usually dances set to their humming; if the dance is matched move-for-move, they then know they’ll be mates for life.  Although like humans, Draconians have been known to change as time goes on, and sometimes this tight bond can easily break apart.

Not much is known how baby Draconians are born; some theorize this ancient race could lay eggs, others say it was like mammals with their live births.  It is also unclear how long the gestation period is as well, but what is known is that they aged similar to humans, however, their longevity would have them looking young for quite some time; they could even choose how young or old they’d want to look as the years go by.

The Dracona Race was known to be very powerful, becoming as strong as a Super Saiyan, to compare.  When they realized their true power, they would take on more features of a dragon, some going so far as to be a full anthro (though this is shown to be rare).  Males and females both gain dragon-like arms and claws, legs, tails, and facial features of a dragon, though males tend to have horns while females do not; females also have subtle facial features compared to males.  Comparing strengths, it would be as strong as Goku’s heighest reached Kaioken Level.  The full-blown anthro form is said to be Super Saiyan strength in comparison, though these forms are rare, and are usually achieved by Draconians that have been training and battling all their lives.  It is unknown if it is activated by strong emotions or not.  All that is known is that while in this state, the Draconian becomes calm, cool, and collected, able to think even more rationally than before, gauge their opponent’s skill better, and be able to counter most attacks.  While in the first form, they’re irrational, unable to keep calm, but can gauge their opponent’s strength only a little, so this causes mistakes.  Even the most experienced fall victim to this form’s impatient nature.

Another thing about them is their skin and bodies.  Because of the battles they like to have, their skin has become tough like a dragon’s scales, able to withstand harsh blows.  Their bodies are built to be able to absorb blows, with their bones becoming incredibly dense as a result.  However, experiments done with modern technology says they wouldn’t be able to withstand modern weapons.  While it seems they can take a bullet with it only puncturing the skin and getting stuck in the bones, things like swords, axes, and blunt weapons will in fact damage them, with blunt weapons being the better choice.  Swords and axes only get stuck like they would if trying to cut a tree, instead of a clean cut like with humans; but things like hammers and mallets will cause their bones to break.  Draconian fangs (canines) have been examined to be like that of a T-Rex, with a jagged saw-like structure, suggesting a heavily meat-based diet, as a few other teeth (mostly the front) were sharp teeth as well; however their back teeth were more like molars, suggesting they ate things other than meat as well.  Their claws are as sharp as a cheetah’s, and it was found on a few specimens that they were filed down, which meant that these claws could grow long enough for a need to file them down somehow.

It is also unclear how this ancient race became extinct in the first place.  Some say the Dracona made a wish to end the race, some say humans started to appear and possibly wiped out the race (which most claim impossible), the second side to the human idea is that the Draconians bred with the humans and their genes became diluted over time to the point only humans were left, another states they died with the dinosaurs (as bones of Draconians and dinosaurs were found to be around similar ages).  It’s possible essences of the Dracona Race still do exist, as humans can briefly obtain superhuman strength in terms of crisis, and some can run faster than the usual speeds of humans.  All that’s known now is that they no longer exist for whatever the reason may be.  Though some like to think they live on through the Namekians’ Dragon Clan and within their Dragon Gods.

UPDATE: Researchers have started to theorize with newer specimens that it is possible the T-Rex is a close ancestor to the Dracona Race.  By examining the teeth, they are trying to find the missing link that would support this theory.  It is possible they may have evolved from the T-Rex itself, but this thought is heavily discarded, although arguments including the Dragon Gods suggest otherwise.

UPDATE: Researchers have found the Draconians can have different scale colors including: ruby (red), aqua (blue), seafoam (green), sunlight (yellow), soot (black), smoky (grey), and amethyst (purple).  Some have been found to have more than one color, though having all of them is extremely rare.  Albinism seems to have existed as well, but like today, is also extremely rare.

Known Abilities:

Dracona Morph: The default Ability all Draconians are born with, it is the ability to change their regular appearance and look more like a dragon.  They can grow all or one traits of either: whiskers, elongated fangs (usually top), tail, claws, and ears.  The tail, however, is rare as some can grow long that they become an inconvenience.  Wings have been known to be a part of this ability, though they are only used to fly.  Young Draconians have to learn over time to use this ability.

Enhanced Strength: Draconians have superhuman strength that they learn to control well into their teenage years.

Enhanced Speed: Draconians have been known to have double the speed of humans.

Enhanced Sense of Smell: Draconian noses are known to be overly sensitive, and can be easily overwhelmed by a strong scent.  This will cause them to become so sluggish they don’t respond to anything until the scent is gone.

Dracona Bulk: Not quite an ability, but Draconians do have tough bodies.  Due to all the battling, their skin is as tough as dragon scales and their bones very dense.  They can survive most blows, but modern weaponry has them outclassed (save for bullets).

Flight: Usually by sprouting wings, Draconians can fly great distances and sometimes at great speeds.  It is unknown if they can fly without sprouting wings.

Ki Sense: Draconians can sense the strength of their opponents by sensing their ki energy.  It is unknown how far away they can detect others.

Known Attacks/Moves:

Ki Blasts: Draconians can use Ki Blasts just like anyone else.  A stronger version exists, but cannot be obtained through normal means.

Dracona Slash: A slashing move done with claws.  The entire hand glows whichever color scale they have, and slash in any direction.  This will damage other Draconians, but not as horribly as if the target were human; they’d be slashed in half.

Dracona Stomp: More of a kicking move, the feet glow whichever color scale they have before delivering the blow.  If it were to strike a human, they would not survive.

Tail Whip: Draconians will strike using their tails, though are not known to strangle using their tails.

Dracona Punch: Similar to Slash, save it’s a punch.  Humans have a better chance of surviving this over the kick.

Ascension: When a Draconian has obtained a stronger power, they transform into their Ascended Form.  They become physically stronger, but are irrational, impatient in nature, unable to fully predict attacks, and will make mistakes.  They can sense their opponent’s strength, but because they don’t remain calm long enough to think, they attack too quickly.
Move Obtained: Dragon Beam: The user charges their ki in the palms of their hands, then lets loose a serpentine-shaped beam at the target.  More devastating a close range.

Greater Ascension: When a Draconian has obtained greater power, they transform into a full Anthro Dragon, called True Dracona.  They are calmer, think rationally, cool and collected in nature, even stronger than before along with twice the speed, and are able to predict most attacks.  They can sense their opponent’s strength, and even if their opponent is stronger, they’re able to strategize and figure out a way to win.
Move Obtained: Dragon Wrath: The user glows a bright neon color, charges the target and unleashes a flurry of punches and ki blasts.  It ends with an abrupt Dragon Beam that sends the target flying.
Move Obtained: Dracona Blast: A stronger version of the normal Ki Blast, though usually in the shape of a dragon’s head.

Trivia
This is drawn from various dragon-themed references.  The tails resemble a little of the Eternal Dragon, due to the link they have.
I tried to keep the names from being too similar to existing moves like Dragon Pulse (Pokemon).  The move "Tail Whip" is actually very common.
"Ascension" and "Greater Ascension" draw reference from Rayquaza's "Dragon Ascent", but I didn't want to use the name.  "Dragon Blast" is kind of a play on "Dragon Pulse"; "Dragon Wrath" is also a play on "Dragon Rage".
"Dracona" and "Draconis" were two names that really popped into my head when thinking of a name.  They are not related to anything as chances are, I have no idea if anything with these names exists.  You could say it is a play on "Draco", which is another dragon name aside from "Drago".
The claws are not present in the examples.  Why?  A: the base is forming fists; B: I didn't want to kill it.  All I have is MS Paint; spare me.
I wanted it to be an Ancient Race so that it didn't tie into anything major.  I've looked up the Namekian Race before, and it never really explains how the Dragon Balls are created, or where the model for the dragon even comes from.  I'm not sure how far back Namekians existed, so I figured it'd be safe if I chose the Dino Era.
